the opp team

oxford public philosophy conjures its various modes of public critical examination as a team – in this case, striving for a non-hierarchical organising collective. philosophising with care includes organising structures with care and cooperation.

our organising efforts, indicated through 'titles', manifest the values in our relations, the way of our interactions, our concerns and practices. philosophers throughout history (from Plato to Buddha Shakyamuni to bell hooks) have interrogated social organisational relations holistically and pervasively, relating conceptual thought to our daily lives in deeply ethical, urgent, and philosophical ways. we too seek to partake in this exploration –navigating without yet knowing quite what that involves, yet prioritising care. so what does this mean for us in practice?

the response consists of a 'this is a start' and a 'so far.' we aim to be consciously adjustable, adaptable, open, and cooperative in testing mutually-supporting ways of creating, discussing, and philosophising in contrast to the patriarchal white supremacist capitalist logic that permeates most institutions with which we are acquainted. this is a lot, and that is why we demarcate a testing space, an unsure space, just like so much (if we say all, we'll reach an absolute generalisation paradox) if not all of life. thus the orientation towards care gives rise to, motivates, and shapes our manifest workings. when conceptual use affects structural practice affects people's lives, we must operate reflectively and vigilantly. there is no single permanent 'team' rule as our consciousness, experiences, and projects change.

thus our 'this is a start' is oriented towards curating a space to support each other as we develop how to operate and develop a space for critical philosophical discussion beyond (but not excluding) our classrooms. our 'so far' includes tracked organising structural developments. as you'll see here, this includes co-director/leading roles for balance of thought and sustainability during Oxford-terms (to get work done while caring about mental health and workload), working groups that  independently brainstorm and collectively coalesce under the collective mission, and encouraging comments, contributions, and project ideas. together, some of what they say: seek to be flexible, expect a lot from yourself, communicate your capacities, practice forgiveness, take responsibility, challenge your actions, and make way for others. we work collectively, in many permutations. although we gather under certain titles, these are intended to indicate our organising responsibilities and credit people's particular contributions rather than enshrine or partake in hierarchies of power.

we are nascent, we're navigating without claiming to know of what that consists, other than enquiring and testing with concerns of which we might discover plenty more. the openness with which we seek to learn and broaden our field of concern and care in form and content is manifest in the consciously adapting team, hopefully in the vein of bell hook's 'radical openness.' our titles might be enough to communicate effectively at various points in time for our critically care-oriented (philosophical & ethical) endeavour of inquiry without denoting an obscuring rigidity that might cut off our inquiry and therefore potential modes of living. living and doing philosophy with care can involve organisation without entailing rigid structures and hierarchies. on this page you'll see a team of folk public philosophers each of whom has vitally contributed to this public-oriented and caring mission.
