Moral Philosophy in a Disenchanted Universe

Lee A. McBride III in conversation with Andrea Pitts

A special event co-hosted by opp and The Philosopher.

In this conversation with Andrea Pitts, Lee A. McBride III will offer a defence of his version of a critical pragmatic ethical naturalism that eschews both materialistic and scientistic dead-ends within a broader picture of disavowing those norms and traditions that justify or perpetuate oppression. Influenced by and critically engaging with the work of thinkers like Leonard Harris, Alain LeRoy Locke, John Dewey, and the tradition of “insurrectionist ethics,” McBride will address commonly used terms such as “racism,” “decolonial,” and “oppression” while critiquing institutionalised moral philosophy to make way for new vocabularies that allow us to (re)imagine and shape futures with less subjection and less degradation.

Graduate Student Reflection Series: Cultivating Teaching Relations through Public Philosophy

do you love philosophy but often wonder how we can practice more supportive learning in the face of institutional and wordly confines? have you too wished for more SPACE and TIME to reflect critically and honestly and playfully with peers and distant friends? do you ever feel a disconnect between philosophical thought and practice? many of opp's original and current members did. co-initiator alicehank winham recently reflected on lessons learned in developing opp amid the pandemic and oxford-based studies -- passing forward lessons of community to send love and strategy forward. perhaps taking a breath and setting off to tie an often isolated academic pursuit back to the world from which it too arises might provide some practical and transformational guidance.
