please include the position you are applying for in the subject line of your email. in your statement of interest, please elaborate upon your interest in joining the selected specific positions at opp, relevant background experience and skills, and any evidence of previous work that can attest to quality and reliability – as well as some ideas you would like to suggest!

for all roles: applicants do not need to have a degree in philosophy but they do need to demonstrate their interest and experience with philosophy in their application. the statement of interest would be where you could elaborate upon this. we understand some people have to leave the discipline because it so narrowly defines what counts as philosophy, because there are resources for more responsible work in other departments, or because they have chosen another subject while maintaining a passion for philosophy. you would also be able to explain how any interdisciplinary perspective enhances the discipline and what other skills and insights it brings to the role(s). you can apply and be accepted for more than one role. many people participate in multiple roles or projects.

we are a volunteer, largely student-based organisation at present. all roles are remote with the possibility of face-to-face contact in oxford.

two co-organisers: co-organisers guide the direction of opp and assist other team members in their tasks. they have the opportunity to organise the team, liaise with and create an expansive and inclusive community around the globe, and develop our educational projects in line with our mission to uplift voices to transform philosophy and our world. they organise systems and pragmatic matters, consider the future of opp in line with the mission statement, facilitate creative and structural development, listen to and support team members, and provide space for critical reflection. ideally there are about 3 co-organisers (with at least 1 based at Oxford) whose tasks would include ensuring through personal action or designation:

  • regular team communications including meetings and written messages

  • updating & liaising with our new circle of advisors

  • maintaining opp's creative and transgressive vision by supporting current projects and considering new ones, as well as ensuring all roles are covered by new members or otherwise stepping in (such as social media postings, newsletters, editing)

  • overseeing all roles organised by the sections on the organisational chart (see ‘meet the team’ page), from regular check-in’s to recruitment

  • ensuring the organisation of systems, like google docs (previous systems tested without success), and consider what new systems need to be put in place

  • ensuring opp continues to live up to its mission statement

a journal coordinator: the journal coordinator guides the direction of the journal by creating a timeline for the journal team, making sure all roles are fulfilled as needed, ensuring section leads carry out responsibilities throughout the year, and making sure all journal contents materials are prepared on time and in requested format for the creative team to compile. the journal coordinator also takes a leading role in organising the launch event and creating development goals with the co-organisers and section leads.

communications/outreach team: the communications team (1) promotes opp’s projects and events by writing a monthly (or one-off significant) newsletter, sending out emails to academic institutions, and advertising opp’s activities on social media (facebook, instagram, twitter, and linkedin). the communications officer works closely with the co-organisers, the journal coordinator, the blog team members, and the events team members to ensure our promotion needs are met (2) works on the accessibility of opp’s work through outreach efforts, developing the diversity of our recruitment efforts, contents and topics, and participants, making our work available more equally to those with different needs and who might otherwise have less access, voice, or representation. this can involve researching and proposing new strategies, engaging with analytics and other tools, and suggesting partnerships or collaborations.

a treasurer/funding team: the treasurer (or funding team) creates an annual budget, keeps track of opp’s expenses and sources of income, ensures our external collaborators are paid in a timely manner, fills out funding applications, and actively researches new funding opportunities. the treasurer also works closely with the co-organisers and journal coordinator on opp’s development goals. ideally, they will begin to investigate other funding support like an ongoing sponsorship, ‘merch,’ donor support, and institutional subscriptions.

events team members: events team members organise at least three events per academic year that are related to the journal’s theme. they may also host other activities such as social events, creative workshops, and events that are related to our blog, podcasts, online courses, or review forum. they work with the co-organisers, journal coordinator, and treasurer/funding team to ensure events align with opp’s goals and journal themes, and fit within our budget. they can suggest co-hosted events with other groups. we welcome creative and non-traditional formats and multi-disciplinary, multi-media, and transgressive events, as well as a mix of online and in-person set ups. therefore, the team might require people with a range of skills: from organising and logistics to technical skills to hosting skills. you do not need all of these to be part of the team.

online classroom team: check out this section on our website. people on this team can contribute to 1+ project(s) (please specify on your application) whether (A) podcast (from the proposal stage to interviewing and technical editing) (B) online course creation (from start to finish) – currently we are working on a South Asian philosophies course (C) extending our online resource library featuring reading lists and written pieces on featured philosophers. alternatively you can apply to work across these projects harnessing one skills. for example, you might enjoy editing podcasts and videos, so could apply to provide this skill to both podcast and online course video creation; or, you might enjoy researching and organising, so then apply to do podcast episode research for interview questions and adding reading lists to the online library; or perhaps you love writing and editing, so you might apply to be a content creator for the podcast scripts and ‘philosopher features’ as well as to be part of the…

open forum team: this team will overlap with other teams, if applying to be a general editor or content producer. we are looking for team members for the ‘review forum’ and to run blog series already underway, including inviting and editing pieces. please specify if you would like to be a copyeditor, a content creator (writing or creating posts), or a blog or series editorial lead.

audio recorders: audio recorders work closely with the journal coordinator and open forum team members to enhance opp’s accessibility. they record pieces that authors could not record themselves. these include contributions that we aim to publish in our journal, blog, or review forum.
