AI, Society, and Social Justice

Dr Peaks Krafft

Suggested Readings

Our first session will be led by Dr Peaks Krafft, a senior research fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute whose work bridges computing, the social sciences, and public interest sector work towards the goals of social responsibility and social justice. We asked Peaks, 'what do you wish a group of passionate individuals going into a diverse range of fields would know about artificial intelligence?'

"In this brief discussion-oriented presentation, I will be introducing the social implications of artificial intelligence (AI) research, and particularly the risks of AI in applications to massive digital surveillance. I'll put special emphasis on how these technologies pose disparate risks to historically surveilled and historically marginalized communities, such as communities of color in the United States. I'll also mention how these concerns have motivated me to participate in several activist organizing efforts happening at Oxford and internationally, especially Oxford Against Schwarzman, NoTechForTyrants, and the American Civil Liberty Union's policy advocacy for surveillance regulation."
